What is Tajweed?
Tajweed (تجويد) literally means to make something excellent. In the context of the Quran, it is the complete body of rules governing how every letter is to be pronounced - from its exact point of articulation to vowel length and letter interaction.
The scholars of Islam have ruled that applying Tajweed in recitation is fard. Reciting without it risks altering the sounds of letters in ways that change meanings.

Tajweed al-Quran is the advanced science of correct recitation. It is distinct from learning to read the Quran (Nazra) and from memorizing it (Hifz). The precise origin points of every Arabic letter in the mouth, throat, lips and nasal passage. There are 17 makhraj (exit points) for 29 letters. Getting these right is the foundation of all Tajweed - without correct makhraj, no rule that follows can be applied accurately.

Characteristics of Letters
Each Arabic letter carries inherent qualities - heaviness (tafkheem), lightness (tarqeeq), vibration (qalqalah), airflow (hams) and more. The sifaat determine the texture and feel of each letter beyond just where it originates.

The Four Rules of N and Nunation
When a noon sakinah or tanween appears before certain letters, one of four rules applies: Izhaar, Idgham, Ikhfa or Iqlab. These four rules affect a very high proportion of Quran text and are essential to correct recitation.

Vowel Lengthening
Madd governs how long vowel sounds are held - from the natural 2-beat madd asli to compulsory 4-6 beat extensions such as madd muttasil, munfasil, leen and 'arid lissukoon.

Nasalization
The nasal sound produced from the ghunna organ, present in the noon and meem letters. Ghunnah must be held for the correct duration and applied in specific contexts such as tashdeed, ikhfa and idgham.

Echo / Vibration
The five qalqalah letters produce a distinct echoing bounce when they appear with sukoon. This vibration is required, strongest at a pause and lighter in the middle of recitation.

The science of where it is permissible, recommended, disliked or prohibited to pause during recitation - and from where to resume correctly. Incorrect waqf can distort meaning.

The Classical Text
Muqaddimah Jazariyyah is the classical matn composed by Imam Shams al-Din Muhammad ibn al-Jazari (1350-1429 CE). Written in 109 rhymed verses, it encodes the essential rules of Quran recitation.
Traditional madrasahs across the world have used this text for over 600 years. At Nūr Academy, our teachers teach from the Jazariyyah directly because this is the authentic way Tajweed has always been transmitted.
Students do not need to memorize the full matn to benefit from the course. The Jazariyyah serves as the authoritative reference behind every rule taught.

The four rules of noon sakinah and tanween plus the three rules of meem sakinah - identified and applied in actual Quran verses until recognition is automatic.

Stage 3
Every type of madd from Madd Asli to Madd Muttasil, Munfasil, Lazim, Leen and 'Arid Lissukoon - each with its obligatory duration.

Stage 4
The echoing vibration of qalqalah letters, the nasal ghunnah in its intensities and the rules of heavy versus light pronunciation in context.

Stage 5
The complete rules of pausing and resuming, plus the rules governing hamzah wasl and hamzah qat'. Students learn correct phrasing and breath control.
3-4 weeks06
Stage 6
All rules applied simultaneously in sustained Tilawat. The teacher identifies and corrects both obvious and subtle errors until recitation is clean and consistent.
